All About Casts & Splints . . .

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A CAST OR SPLINT?
The purpose of a cast or splint is for comfort and to immobilize and protect the injured area.

CAN I TAKE A SHOWER OR BATH WITH MY CAST OR SPLINT ON?
You may take a shower or bath with your cast or splint on but you SHOULD NOT GET THE CAST OR SPLINT WET. Wrap the cast or splint in a plastic garbage bag and secure the open end with tape. The "cinch sak" garbage bags usually work well. Waterproof splint/cast protectors are also available for purchase at many pharmacies.

WHAT IF I GET MY CAST OR SPLINT WET?
Casts, splints and dressings should be kept dry. If yours becomes soaked, you should phone our office as soon as possible. Wet padding can produce a damp, mildew order and risk problems like infection.

Your should NEVER REMOVE YOUR CAST OR SPLINT unless we instruct you to do so. Call our office for advice.

WHY DOES IT ITCH UNDER THE CAST OR SPLINT?
Normal perspiration may cause some itching. DO NOT insert objects (pens, coat hangers, etc.) under the cast or splint to scratch the skin. It itching is excessive, you should phone our office. If you notice any numbness, increased burning or rubbing sensations under the cast or splint  phone us.

WHAT IF MY CAST OR SPLINT FEELS TOO LOOSE?
Casts and splints may become loose as the initial swelling subsides, and sometimes need to be replaced. You should phone our office if you notice you are able to move an area that you could not move when the cast or splint was applied.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE INITIAL CAST OR SPLINT IS REMOVED?
Your physician may order a custom-made splint for you to use after the cast or splint is removed. This new splint can be made in our Hand Therapy Department. Please allow additional time following your office visit the day your cast or splint is removed in case a custom splint needs to be made for you that day. Instructions regarding use and care of this type of splint will be given to you at the time it is made. (Please refer to Acute Hand Therapy information sheet for more details.)
